Frequently Asked Questions

What else do you want to know about LILY P4D?
What exactly is LILY P4D?

LILY P4D is a pressure-activated system for controlling microphone volume. It reduces mic feedback, mic bleed, and unwanted stage noise. One step. Total mic control. Just step on the footpad to open your mic. Step off the footpad to close it down.

How does LILY P4D work?

When you step on the pressure-sensitive footpad, your mic is activated. When you step off the footpad, the volume of your mic will be lowered, which reduces mic feedback, mic bleed and unwanted stage noise. You can choose from 3 levels of volume reduction to fit your needs: light, medium, or heavy. Check out our expected gain reduction chart in our user manual.

Can I use LILY P4D with any type of microphone?

Yes! LILY P4D works with all types of microphones including dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones. It can also be used with wireless microphones. LILY P4D works with any balanced mic signal, giving you maximum flexibility for any live sound setup.

What makes LILY P4D different from a microphone gate?

LILY P4D offers a more natural and intuitive solution for mic control. Unlike traditional microphone gates that rely on sound sensitivity or optical sensors, LILY P4D uses a pressure-sensitive footpad, allowing you to adjust the mic to full volume by simply stepping on the footpad. When you step off the footpad, the volume is reduced. This eliminates issues like misfires from head movements, lighting interference, or unwanted sensitivity adjustments. The result is smooth, reliable changes in mic volume that reduce mic feedback, mic bleed, and stage noise; giving you total control without sacrificing sound quality.

How does LILY P4D improve sound quality for live performances?

LILY P4D improves live sound quality by reducing microphone bleed, which keeps the mix cleaner and more controlled. Through the pressure-sensitive footpad, you can lower your mic volume when the mic is not in use, minimizing unwanted noise and ambient sounds. This results in better sound quality for the audience, a cleaner monitor mix for you and your bandmates, and lowers the likelihood of feedback and other sound issues.

How hard is it to set up LILY P4D?

Setting up LILY P4D is quick and easy:

Step 1: Connect the LILY P4D control pedal to your microphone and your mixer or snake with XLR cables.

Step 2: Connect 9V power from your pedal board. Or use the included 9V power supply.

Step 3: Connect the pressure-sensitive footpad to the P4D input on the LILY P4D control pedal.

Now you have full control over your mic by stepping on and off the pad. For more details, check out Setting Up LILY P4D.

Does LILY P4D work with wireless systems?

Yes! Simply connect your LILY P4D between the wireless receiver and the mixer, snake, or audio system to control the level of the balanced audio signal. Depending on the placement of the wireless receiver, it might require longer XLR cables to run from side stage, to your stage position, and back. Want to walk with the wireless mic? Just press the bypass switch on the LILY P4D control pedal and you are free to roam.

Can I power LILY P4D with my pedalboard?

Yes, LILY P4D can be powered directly from your pedalboard’s 9V supply, making it a convenient addition to any setup without requiring additional power sources.

Can I adjust the amount of volume reduction on my LILY P4D?

Yes, LILY P4D allows you to adjust the amount of volume reduction with three options: Light, Medium, or Heavy. The exact dB reduction varies depending on the microphone you’re using, but we provide a detailed document in our user manual for even more specific information. This flexibility ensures you can fine-tune the amount of mic volume reduction to fit your setup perfectly.

Is there more than one size of pressure-sensitive footpad available?

LILY P4D offers two sizes of pressure-sensitive footpads to suit different performance needs. The Travel size measures 10 inches by 15 inches, making it compact and ideal for smaller setups or easy integration with pedal boards. For larger stages or more dynamic control, the Arena size is 24 inches by 36 inches, offering more surface area while delivering the same pressure-activated functionality. Both sizes ensure reliable sound control, giving you the flexibility to choose the one that best fits your setup.

Does it matter which side of the pressure-sensitive footpad is facing up?

It does not. For both the Travel P4D and the Arena P4D, both sides of the footpad are pressure sensitive.

What's the best way to secure LILY P4D?

Use gaffer tape or non-slip matting under the pressure-sensitive footpad to keep it stable during a performance. For touring setups, the Arena P4D provides a larger footprint for easier positioning.

What’s included when I purchase a LILY P4D system?

Your purchase of a LILY P4D system includes a LILY P4D control pedal, a 9V power supply, and a pressure-sensitive footpad -- either the Travel size (10in x 15in) or the Arena size (24in x 36in).

Why is it called LILY P4D?

LILY P4D, which is pronounced "Lily Pad," is a reference to its function. "P4D" stands for Pad for Ducking, emphasizing its key feature of reducing microphone volume, sometimes called ducking, when you step off the footpad. The name combines the idea of simplicity and control; easy to remember and easy to use for both musicians and audio engineers.
